ESP/ARS with off road mode
With an array of safety systems as standard, the new Amarok remains stable in any situation. ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program), featuring Brake Assist, is one such system that keeps the Amarok on the right track. The system constantly monitors and evaluates data from all four wheels, and applies braking force where necessary to help prevent the vehicle swerving in critical conditions. The Brake Assist works in conjunction with the ESP and kicks in when the system recognises heavier than normal braking. It automatically applies extra braking pressure, which in combination with other systems such as ABS brings the Amarok to a safe and controlled stop. Unique for its class, the ESP system remains active even when the Amarok is operated in 4x4 High mode.

Off road ABS/ASR
When off-road conditions begin to get difficult, Amarok remains composed thanks to its range of safety systems. A first for vehicles of this class, Volkswagen has developed and improved systems such as the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) to work in conjunction with the 4MOTION system, improving braking conditions off-road. As soon as the ‘Off Road’ mode is pushed, the braking interval is increased, and ESP and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) are tuned to Off Road mode. In an emergency stop situation, the wheels are locked in a controlled manner, encouraging a build up of the loose surface material in front of each wheel, which can substantially reduce the stopping distance of the car.

EDL (Electronic Differential Lock)
Particularly useful on slippery, uneven surfaces, EDL locks the wheel that is spinning, transferring power to wheels that have grip. On 4MOTION models EDL is combined with a mechanical rear differential lock, which locks both rear wheels meaning they receive the same amount of power. This option offers optimal traction for varying surfaces.
